Vaishali-The birth Place of Lord Mahavira

Vaishali was a city in Bihar, India, and is now an archaeological site. Vaishali is where Buddha preached his last sermon before his death. Vishwa Shanti Stupa (World Peace Pagoda) built by the Nipponzan Myohoji sect of Japan is a major monument in Vaishali where a small part of the Buddhas relics found in Vaisali have been enshrined .

Vaishali today is a small village surrounded by banana and mango groves as well as rice fields. But excavations in the area have brought to light an impressive historical past.Vaishali holds special significance for the Buddhist devotees. The ancient city of Vaishali was the place, where Lord Buddha had delivered his last sermons and announced His prospective mahaparinirvana that was to take place in Kushinagar.Vaishali is also a sacred place for the Jains as Lord Mahavira was born in Vaishali.

Here is the glimpse of this place( Hope this will be useful to get some feel about the place) :

I am fortunate to get chance to visit this historical place after long long time .Thanks to my sister who provided me this opportunity..!! 🙂 🙂 I was with my family heading towards my home town to attend my sister wedding. Time was around 12-12:30 PM on 14th June 2014. It was quite exciting journey as all my family members were with me. Infact we enjoyed alot during the trip. On the way to home town we randomly decided to visit this place called “Vishwa Shanti Stupa- Lord Budha’s Place”.Weather was quit hot infact at their peak but the excitement to visit this place was at the highest peak.;)

I will recommend this due to its historical importance:

  • Vaishali, a quiet hamlet steeped in legend, set amidst lush paddy fields. Named after King Visala, it was the capital of the Lichhavis,
  • It is believed to be one of the earliest republics of the world, having an elected body of representatives and an efficient administration, as early as 6th century BC.
  • Vaishali is significant to both Buddhists and Jains. Lord Buddha preached his first sermon, and announced his impending Nirvana, here.
  • To commemorate the importance of the site, Emperor Ashoka erected one of his famous pillars. Vaishali is also the birthplace of Lord Mahavira.
  • Vaishali became the venue of the second Buddhist council. Two stupas were erected to recall this event.
  • One hundred years after the Buddha’s ‘parinirvana’, 700 monks from all over North India, assembled here, to discuss the 10 points of ‘vinaya’, the rule of conduct, under dispute.

Its nice place to visit and to explore our culture..! If you guys get some chance to visit near by, then visit this place as well.

Cheers,

Rajdeep
